Jamie beck what kind of camera
I started shooting professionally in high school, and went to college for fashion photography at FIT in Manhattan. Then I started taking freelance jobs as a photographer and started my blog in Kevin, my husband and business partner, said I should do something with the archive of photos in my closet , so I started the blog to have a place for my old negatives and that's when everything started changing. Jamie with husband and business partner, Kevin Burg.
When did you start to shoot with a digital camera? I went in kicking and screaming but to survive as a photographer commercially and personally, you have to. There are photographers who shoot in film but Kevin made me start shooting with the Canon 5D mark II , it was the only camera that felt closer enough to an old film camera. That was probably in , , but I still shoot with film. What are some of your favorite things to shoot?
I like shooting travel; we travel all the time, it's almost a souvenir to me to photograph my travels. I also love shooting flowers, I do that all the time. But the blog became popular, and while I was doing jobs shooting for indie magazines, I thought that more people would be able to see these images on my blog than in this magazine , and that was a moment for me.
I began to think about what stories I can tell and what experiences can I share with other people. What steps did you take to make it a success? The first two years of blogging, I was shooting all the time, working to collaborate with other sites in order to get links back.
It was a lot of building and organizing. Then when the cinemagraph came in at New York Fashion week, it completely changed. The traffic for the blog shut it down , and the emails became crazy.
It was like something out of a movie. That started the next level of conversation and opportunities. Did social media help at all with the jump start? They were really supporting our community of original content creators. We were part of the original smaller group of people [on Tumblr] so it was easier to engage. We went to meet-ups , and made friends who were incredibly supportive. It was definitely right time, right place. How did the cinemagraph come about?
We had a digital camera that had a video function, and I thought, ' wouldn't it be nice to have something that could give people the experience of fashion week? What if we had a photograph but something a little more into it? I would shoot in stills, then flip my camera to video mode and Kevin would later hand-stitch them together [in post-production]. We posted it on Tumblr and after the first one, I knew it would change my life.
The photograph came to life. The cinemagraph, a moving photo Jamie and Kevin created in When did you feel like you had "made it" as a photographer? I feel like I'll go to my grave thinking I haven't made it.
I have so many goals, I'm always thinking about the next photograph and I have miles to go. I have a lot to learn but that's the fun part. I enjoy finding new paths and new ways. What advice would you give someone who is young and wants to have a position such as yours one day? Shoot all the time. Be prepared to work hard. Know that people will take your work, not credit you, copy you, and take your ideas. Just stay focused on taking the photographs you see in your mind.
Know there are a lot of different routes to achieve your dreams. Know you will have a lot of lessons along the way. Surround yourself with people who believe in your work and your vision. Our managers are our champions. I get offline and go to art museums, travel to a new place, watch the light dance throughout the day, watch documentaries on my idol photographers, read books, watch movies.
So much of having a studio is running a business. We produce many of our shoots, so we are always paying contractors, photo labs, rental houses, insurance companies, assistants, etc. When I have a camera in my hands and I am shooting. It is truly what makes me the most happy. I love taking pictures. What gear do you prefer to use on a shoot?
It depends. First you start with a vision. How do I want the shots to look in the end? Then I match the equipment list to my desired outcome.
Last week I did two shoots, all on film, one with Dannijo in Armani and the next coming out soon with a medium format Pentax Other camera bag staples — 32GB Cards, gum, extra batteries, film, card reader, pen, light meter I have a sick hobby of liking to guess what the correct light exposure is and then testing myself… the sunny 16 rule , hand strap , lens options, lens magnifier for a quick macro adaptation, iPhone charger, business cards.
You still shoot in film sometimes, what labs do you like in New York? I remember, for two years I never once cooked at home, which is insane to me now living in France, as I cook almost every single meal and it brings me so much joy. I think being disconnected for so long from basic human life is part of what led me to Provence.
I wanted to be grounded again. Did you ever imagine yourself to be where you are right now? I had always imagined myself in Paris but I knew Paris would just be another version of my life in New York.
So you left Manhattan to move to Provence for a year. How did you settle on Provence of all locations in the world? I had visited this specific region of Provence a couple times before on client trips and something about it just haunts you with her patina of natural beauty. Originally I thought I would spend a year in Provence and then move to L. I feel as if my soul is here. I will be designing my first Provence linen dress this summer for a local brand as a special capsule handmade by artisans in the region which I am excited to experience the process of!
Who or what inspires you? I always find myself inspired watching Katie Rogers, Paper Fashion, on her instagram stories!
Otherwise my inspiration comes from visiting art museums, artist studios, or looking through my collection of art books. One of the most inspiring experiences I have ever had in my life was staying at Chateau de Gudanes run by this magical woman, Karina Waters whose approach to life is what dreams are made of! She is so inspiring and what she has created, or saved, at the Chateau is pure magic. Thank you so much Jamie for bringing your beautiful perspective to Gal Meets Glam and sharing with our readers.
