What is the difference between wing chun and weng chun

Small villages were protected by renown kung fu masters. The Lo brothers for example drove off entire bands of robbers only armed with their broadswords. On one occasion the Lo brothers are said to have even chased off 20 armed robbers without severely injuring them. However Wai Yan, did not really want to know about kung fu, because he had often experienced kung fu practitioners as violent and uneducated. One day Lo Chi Woon asked Wai Yan whether he would teach his younger son the art of Chinese writing This is comparable to accepting the role of godfather in western culture Wai Yan happily agreed to do so, accepting the consequences of this promise.

Dai Duk Lan Master Wai Yan converted one of his drugstores called Dai Duk Lan into a Wing Tiun research academy, where in the evening all the goods were moved away, in order to create room for the training.

He did not want to enroll many pupils in this research academy, but rather bring together and unite the best Wing Tiun of his day. These were to research the art together, the art that was created in the Wing Tiun Dim room of the Southern Shaolin Temple of Siu Lam, train together and discuss theory, without holding back any secrets. After fighting him and being in awe of his skill, he became friends with him and showed him his ambitious project.

This man was esteemed in Southern China, because he always defeated every challenger without much of an effort and also maintained many contacts to other kung fu masters.

Tam Kong has specialized in Kam Naa grabbing and controlling. And could beat most opponents there with ease, because many Kung Fu fighters, did not devote enough attention to grabbing. No being able to find him, he asked his pupil, Master Tang Yick, to take his place. However the openness and warmth of the others changed his mind.

With Sifu Tang Yick the project now included five members. They also invited Kung Fu Masters from other styles to share and exchange their experience. Sifu Way Yan studied in those years mainly with G. M Chu Chung Man and G. Tang Yick, but unfortunately due to his extremely busy life , never managed to learn the system entirely.

This information was received from the pupils of G. Tang Yik. Thus it was decided that Dai Duk Lan chief instructors were to be G. Chu Chun Man and G. Tang Yick. When the Dai Duk Lan project, as a training and researching center, came to an end, G. Thanks folks! Sandy , Jun 14, Its all about money and nothing else.

Most big organisations have copyright to their names i. Its all the same it is only depends on how good the Sifu is. Sifu Scotty , Jun 22, Because you all pronounce it pretty the same, they could change the name. Why they all spell it different is really just speculation, some say because short for Wing Chun is WC which was maken fun of during competitions by MAists of another style.

Anyway, it's all the same. Orcrist , Jun 22, Aside from political differences, there ARE technical differences based on softness, how they redirect force, what their translation of the forsm are, etc. I talked to a guy who was about to learn the last 6th form of the style after practicing for 4 years. I've known people that practice for literally decades and they're still perfecting their 4th form meaning, our si-fu will not let them learn anything past that.

Jehovah , Jul 3, Last edited: Nov 16, There are only two original types of Wing chun Jee shim weng chun kuen and Hung fa yi wing chun This system is a Chan expression of martial arts meaning that it is complete; it deals with Chan Buddhism, all ranges of combat and, it also has complete Chi Gung training. A related system that also came out of the Southern Shaolin Temple was directly connected to the revolutionary societies, or the Hung Mun.

However, the focus of Wing Chun is on the Economy of Motion, which created different sets of body structures than those found in Weng Chun. However, both systems share the same roots in Chan Buddhism and come from the Southern Shaolin Temple. They are considered sister arts. In summary, both systems came from the Southern Shaolin Temple, but from different places within the Temple. I remembered the "Opera Boat" SLT video I'd posted a month or so ago and noticed that it actually lined up with White Crane's movements quite a bit more than the conventional SLT most Wing Chun schools today, though the movements were very hard and robotic.

For example, here's the San Zhan form from White Crane:. Last edited by a moderator: Nov 24, Joined Feb 24, Messages Reaction score 4. I come from a lineage cho family that has direct red boat ancestry and can be traced back a long way.

Our style is very relaxed and has more in common, energy wise, to some modern wing chun than that video of "red boat wing chun" or the karate katas. Saying that, I've seen videos of Cho Gar sifus practicing our SLT hard and jerky for the camera and then practicing it the complete opposite way when in private. Maybe that what the "red boat wing chun" sifu was doing in the video. Another update. Doing some more research, I've found that Weng Chun is not an art exclusively related to Andreas Hoffmann and his instructors, but rather Andreas Hoffman's branch is one of several branches of Weng Chun.

So Wing Chun and Weng Chun are not two exclusive arts but rather two different terms for the same art with the exception of the Lo Family branch which is a hybrid style. When people talk about Weng Chun as its own system they're referring to Andreas Hoffmann's style, which does have a good chance of being its own art.
